Medium and the Message


    Hello. I am Hamza, and in this blog, I will discuss the effect of the medium on the message. The medium can alter the message in various ways. Medium can give many messages without saying anything.  It is Marshall McLuhan’s famous idea, The medium is the message. McLuhan says what is important is not the message but the medium. 

    

    Marshall McLuhan gives us an example of electric light. This example makes me understand what he wants to say. When he gives the example of electric light, what he wants from us is not that we can see directly, but what we can see beyond it. If we look at the so-called electric light as a mere means of illumination, we will be deceived by its tangible effects. Real message hidden in its intangibility. It can illuminate the darkness. In other words, electric light may not tell us anything, but without saying anything, we can infer messages such as working, producing, and being informed. 

As we can see, from time to time, not always in my opinion, the medium can be a most important thing that can affect their way of thinking about the message. If we want an example of what is more suitable for the current world, let's talk about the effect of the message on social media, email, and in person. In this example, let's say the message is an advertisement related to a new game that has just been released. 

  • In the first situation, if we see this game on TikTok, in the form of an advertisement made by a famous content creator, we think game is good, because people give that person's thoughts more value.
  • In the second situation, if the advertisement is sent by email, people think it is spam. The main reason for this is that the majority of incoming email is spam. They make your mail bin like a trash can, so people have trouble deciding what they need. This situation makes people annoyed. 
  • The last situation is more complicated. In my opinion, when human-to-human communication takes place, there are many things we must be wary of. If people in this situation love the game's genre or have common ground on this game, the person who takes the message has a positive opinion on this game. But, in an opposite situation, he may not even have a good opinion.

    

    In conclusion, the medium can change the core of the message. People's ideas can differ depending on what medium they use. 


In this essay, I use AI in two directions:

  • Firstly, I ask what the main idea of the given piece is, and explain the electric light. 
  • Secondly, I use AI to correct my grammar mistakes and write the essay more correctly.
